Greg Combet

October 13, 2010

Congratulations to Greg Combet for making the point the Green political party (for that’s what they are – a political party) had blocked on three occasions an emissions trading scheme.

Greg Combet

We would be pricing carbon today had they allowed Kevin Rudd’s scheme through the Senate in December last year.

Two other quick points:

  • If we succeed in getting a scheme we won’t be the only country to have one. Europe has had emissions trading since 2005.
  • The NSW Greenhouse Gas Reduction Scheme was the world’s first carbon trading scheme and came into effect in January 2003.

It could easily have been nominated by Kevin Rudd as an alternative to the ETS earlier this year.  That would have minimised the political damage he suffered on the issue.

Combet is indeed a rising star in the Federal Government landscape. Brings a lot of commonsense to the role. If anyone can bring the Greens out on their shameful hypocricy it’s him. Also good to have bloke from who represents a coalmining electorate in Lake Macquarie in the role, he’s forced by political necessity to bring in an ETS with very clear communication and pragmatism. In restructuring our economy to better address the greatest market failure of global warming, we cannot have workers feeling like a Labor Government doesn’t care for their interests or their industry.
