The Cunning Monk

October 28, 2010

The Dalai Lama is more a cunning monk than a holy man, I told an audience of 300 government students at the University of Sydney.

His plan for Tibet goes well beyond autonomy in religious affairs.

Moreover, he extends the boundaries of Tibet to rope in the provinces of Yunnan, Sichuan and Xinjiang Autonomous Region on the basis that they include Tibetan minorities.

This is a plan for the dismemberment of China. Australian politicians should stop being intimidated into meeting this theological politician on his too-frequent visits.

None of the above should be taken as condoning Chinese repression and brutality when it manifests itself.

By the way, if you want to ponder the centrality of this issue for the Chinese, look at a map. Tibet is China’s second largest province-level entity and 16 percent of its territory.

No Australian politician would be foolish enough to encourage Irian Jaya separatists and thus embrace dismemberment of Indonesia.
