Can Solar Do It?

November 29, 2010

On stage at the Sydney Theatre Company - for ABC's Big Issues

The Sydney Theatre Company under the leadership of Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton has taken the lead. The company has installed solar panels onto the theatre’s roof: the Greening the Wharf project.  Solar power will now provide up to 70 per cent of the company’s electrical needs.

The initiative is funded by the federal and NSW governments and The Shi Family Foundation. Doctor Zhengrong Shi, is the founder and chairman of Suntech, the company that supplied the panels.

To mark the occasion I participated in a panel discussion to be broadcast in the next few weeks.

The big question is :  can renewables do it – that is get us off our carbon addiction before the full scale consequences of global warming cut in.

For more information on the Green Precinct’s Fund go to http://www.environment.gov.au/water/policy-programs/green-precincts/index.html

The program will air on ABC News 24 on Sunday, 12 December at 1pm, and will be broadcast again in February 2011 on ABC-1.
