For the Gillard Government : Just Do The Right Thing

June 27, 2011

During the give-and-take panel discussion at Lowy today, Laura Tingle of The Australian Financial Review hinted at a view within the federal government that it is likely to lose the next election and might as well devote itself to good policy. This Götterdämmerung option – you can see I’ve just returned from seeing the Wagner Ring – might be the most intelligent way to rebuild support. Policy success, after all, is the way to political success.

The Government cannot back down on an emissions trading scheme. Get the thing in place and challenge the Opposition to dismantle it. Challenge them to fund their tax cuts without the billions in revenue that will flow from the ETS and the revamped mining tax. Take the advice Paul Keating once gave to me: “Stand in the middle of the expressway and dare them to run you down.”

In any case, I’m more optimistic about the prospects of a government recovery.

I agree. I respect Julie Gillard more now than before for having the long-term national interest in heart rather than her own political career. Even if she goes down due to this policy, she will be remembered kindly by history. I hope you are right with your optimism and I wish her the best of luck.

I believe Gillard will only be remembered in history as Australia’s first female PM.

OK 2 political commentaries today on the Drum and now Sky news, The simple point is the Govt has been unable to sell their policies and now the affect of the tax. If people get the chance listen to Mark Day’s simple explanation.

Yes hot and firey we need so much more of that. Bob you just a mention on QnA at 9.55

The Labor Government will need workers at the polling booths in 2014. Unless the National Conference accepts the Bracks/Faulkner/Carr reforms more disgruntled ALP members will not renew. For a renaissance in the ALP be need a policy driven change and a real role for rank and file members. We will not gather new members if they see their vote steamrolled by a few factional hacks who marshall huge union votes at the conferences.
