Best Crime Fiction

August 11, 2011

John Ruszczyk hails from San Diego. After teaching in Iran and Saudi Arabia he arrived in Australia. He now is the Dymocks franchise owner in Warringah Mall.

In fact, he’s owned the Dymocks franchise there for the last 25 years, longer than any other Dymocks franchise owner in Australia.

A good person to talk about books, I thought, when I attended the Dymocks celebration in Melbourne’s Crown Casino this week.

His main recommendation: James Lee Burke, the writer of detective fiction anchored in Louisiana and Montana. John told me that James Lee Burke is a cult figure in Franceand there was a recent French documentary about him. His best books? Well, start with The Neon Rain or Heaven’s Prisoner, advises John.

I will, sometime. So little time, so much to read.

Burke gets very *very* formuliac about four or five novels in.
Try Derek Raymond- he didn’t write enough to get stale. His “I Was Dora Suarez” will knock your eyes out.
