The nuclear fuel pools at Fukushima are in a precarious condition. If a pool should drain (say due to a minor earthquake) the exposed fuel rod casings will burn, releasing tonnes of radioactive plutonium, uranium, caesium and strontium, enough to make large parts of the Northern Hemisphere effectively uninhabitable.

US Senator Wyden recently visited Fukushima and came away very alarmed.

Most of the uranium is of Australian origin. Australia has a moral obligation to give Japan all assistance in managing this potential catastrophe.
