Guns and Bibles

That Rick Santorum is polling double figures in Republican contests confirms this is a B Team contest. But I warmed to the line from his election night speech in support of Americans who live for their guns and Bibles.

It does inspire this thought, however.

Imagine if a senior Iranian politician – a candidate for leadership – said his people should rally around the Koran and their guns.

And imagine the huffing and puffing on Fox, the op eds from the neo cons, the grim faced commentary from the Washington elite that this confirms the threat from Teheran and that war was all the more likely as a result.

There is little sense in the great republic, the US, of how its domestic antics get projected in the wider world.

yes it was classic, being unemployed and having worked 20 years in fin services in Sydney and Wollongong the daily reports are ever more depressing, one of my joys was to browse Seek etc and watch channel 604/5 for FNC and CNN, I have had to cut my subscription, and as a consequence I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms from the Fox coverage, I watched with amazement when Juan Williams asked Newt about the lw paying jobs, his response made the audience whoop with delight, I find that listening to this stuff has made me get ever more desperate but a job paying $7.50 an hour would be a disaster. Nearly all the guys like O’Reilley, Sean H etc relay how they often did low paying jobs and it was character building etc. Now of course beause they earn bucket loads they complain their tax is too high. Interesting that a “Socialist” President maintained the Bush tax cuts, still spent an enormous amount on defence but Bob you would have seen the response to Ron Paul when queried on cuts and explained his focus would be on domestic defence spending as well as foreign policy views, the audience was clearly less than impressed that the rivers of defence gold would be turned off.

As for guns and bibles I love the fact that Fox believes religion is under attack i.e. XMAS etc and the reverse perspective those extreme Muslims threatening with guns and Korans maybe they might sink an aircraft carrier and block the straits of Hormuz.

PS if Macquarie needs my Resume let me know!!!

    Mr. Carr,

Enjoyed your articles on the republican nominees. The only other piece on the Republican Primaries from an Australian commentator I have read so far was Mike Carton of the SMH – it was dreadful.

I would like to read your thoughts on Ron Paul.
